Money Talks

Dont' listen to what momma says, money doesn't grow on trees. Money is pumped from the ground.
That's right, oil.
I work in Business Support (aka, Info Tech) of an oil company up in Ft. McMurray, Alberta. It hit -30° C this week.. it gets to -40°C. Who would want to work here?
Money talks.

My company produces roughly 300,000 barrels of oil per day. Take a look at the oil price as of Friday Nov 26, 2010: $83.86 USD/barrel.
$83.86 x 300,000 barrels = $25,185,000 (daily revenue)
$25,185,000 x 365 days/year = $9,182,670,000 (yearly revenue)
After all the calculations... $9,182,670,000 is pumped out of the ground each year!!!! That is $9.18 BILLION. That money is split across 6000 employees, maintenance costs, 5 other companies that own my company, the provincial (Alberta), and federal government. No wonder Alberta doesn't have PST!
I met a mining engineering coop student here; he got offered a full-time position the moment he finishes coop in December. He's from a vibrant city in the east of Canada, a city-boy, and absolutely HATES IT here. He absolutely hates this place.
He accepted the job offer. He'll be here for another 3 years. WHY? Money talks.
$84,000 yearly salary,
+ $20,000 signing bonus,
+ some extra $$$ to pay for a mortgage.
That is a LOT of money for a new graduate; only new graduated MBAs get that much money.
What is even MORE shocking.... those who operate the heavy-hauler trucks that bring the oil sand to the plant get paid at least $150,000/year. THAT'S RIGHT! $150k... that is how much doctors make.

So if you want to be rich, make as much as a doctor, don't go to school. Drive trucks for a living and you'll be set for life (well at least until the oil runs out - which won't be for another 50 years).
Money talks.

  1. I like Adam's comment.

If I got a dollar every time you said "money talks" in this blog post, I'd also be rich(er). Okay, not really, but you said it a lot.

I take it you're staying in Fort Mac? :P

  3. If you're young, you should just do those jobs for 1-2 years and then afterwards either travel or go to school fulltime without worrying about $$.
